Join us for a Winter quilting retreat with renowned Japanese quilter Hiroe Mogi and sashiko designer Sue Howie: four days of quilting, foundation piecing, sashiko embroidery and boro-inspired textiles at Tamborine Mountain, August 2025.

Located in the gorgeous Gold Coast hinterland, Eagle Heights Mountain Resort offers stunning sunrises, sunsets, and truly amazing views.

Retreat Workshop 1: Quilting and Foundation Piecing with Hiroe Mogi – August 4-6

Hiroe will be hosting a workshop that teaches students the art of Foundation Piecing, using one of her latest quilt patterns:  Autumn Leaves.

Autumn Leaves is a stunning example of contemporary quilting, showcasing Hiroe’s mastery of colour, texture, and design, resulting in a visually captivating and emotionally resonant work. The quilt’s intricate design showcases a variety of leaf motifs, each meticulously crafted and arranged to evoke an engaging sense of the seasons in transition.

Hiroe’s skilful combination of hand-appliqué, foundation piecing, and intricate free-motion embroidery create a visually rich and textured result. Under her expert tutelage, attendees will have the opportunity to create something truly special, a rare opportunity to learn the Foundation Piecing technique from a true master of the art.

About Quilting Tutor Hiroe Mogi

Hiroe has been teaching Foundation Piecing and English Paper Piecing for many years, and is known for creating stunning quilts using contemporary Japanese fabrics. Hiroe was born in Nagoya Japan and has lived in Australia for the last 25 years. Under her boutique label HM Textiles, she is an importer and wholesaler of curated Japanese Fabrics and a sashiko designer. During this time she has made many quilts to demonstrate the use of the Japanese fabrics she imports.

In the last 15 years she has become well known worldwide for her artistry in producing pre-printed sashiko patterns.

Retreat Workshop 2: Sashiko and Boro with Sue Howie and Hiroe Mogi – August 7-8

August 7: Sue will cover the various ways of creating a piece of sashiko, including pre-printed designs, transferring traditional designs onto fabric for stitching, through to participants creating their own sashiko designs. Project options will include a sashiko table runner or sashiko tote bag (pictured).

August 8: Through learning the Boro method of fabric reinforcement and upcycling, participants will have the opportunity to create a Boro laptop case, tote bag or wall-hanging.

About Sashiko Tutor Sue Howie

Over the past 20 years, Sue Howie has cultivated a profound love for Japanese textiles and crafts, dedicating herself to sharing her knowledge and passion for sashiko and boro through teaching and demonstration.

Sue has earned a stellar reputation as an innovative and engaging instructor, known for her patient and accessible teaching style. She is committed to creating a welcoming environment for students of all ages, from 8 to 108, making her classes enjoyable and inclusive. Sue’s lessons cater to a wide range of skill levels, supporting both novice and experienced stitchers alike. By carefully tailoring her classes, she ensures that every student can grow in their understanding and appreciation for these traditional art forms.

Items required for Sue’s workshop

Guests are encouraged to bring: a sashiko needle, sashiko thread (or similar), small scissors, rotary cutter, cutting mat, a biro, ceramic pencil (sewline or Bohin) or similar. Alternatively, workshop kits will be available for a small fee.

Please note that costings for this retreat do not include accommodation, and guests will need to arrange their own lodging. Of course, if you’re a ticket-holder who lives locally, you’re welcome to drive to the venue each day.
