Sashiko Artisan Atsushi Futatsuya to Visit Australia in July 2027
We are delighted to announce that Atsushi Futatsuya, renowned sashiko artisan, educator, and storyteller, will be visiting Australia in July 2027 to present a series of exclusive workshops and a public lecture.
Atsushi is internationally respected for his artistry and dedication to sharing sashiko, a centuries-old Japanese hand-stitching practice that blends beauty, functionality, and philosophy. Trained by his mother, Keiko Futatsuya, he has become one of the world’s most important voices in keeping the tradition of sashiko alive while sharing its deeper cultural meanings.

The BBC recently interviewed Atsushi Futatsuya for a segment called ‘Japanese Sashiko: Stitching Stories’. Lean more about Atsushi’s story by clicking on the image above.
Through his teaching, Atsushi shares more than just techniques – he brings forward the philosophy of sashiko: mindfulness, respect for materials, and the human stories woven into every stitch.
During his visit, Atsushi will present a unique program of workshops and lectures, offering crafters and textile enthusiasts the opportunity to learn directly from a master of the technique.
