Here is a recap of the June 2025 textile and sashiko retreat that I hosted at Tamborine Mountain.
Tamborine Mountain provided the perfect environment for my students to enjoy four days of textile art, slow stitching, and taking in the beautiful weather and sights.
Â
Textile Art Workshop with Caroline Sharkey
The students and I loved learning new skills from textile artist Caroline Sharkey. Under Caroline’s expert guidance, students worked with fabrics and thread to create some outstanding pieces of textured and embellished fabric art.
Â
Over two days, Caroline’s textile art workshop covered several techniques for embellishing the fabric surface, creating unique colour palettes through combinations of different fabrics, using raw edge appliqué and thread painting to enhance the surfaces.
Â
Sashiko and Boro Workshop with Sue Howie
My students had a fantastic couple of days learning so much about sashiko and boro. We covered various methods of creating a piece of sashiko, including pre-printed designs, transferring traditional designs onto fabric for stitching, through to students creating their own sashiko designs.
Students also learned the boro method of fabric reinforcement and upcycling, producing some very impressive work.
Â
Student projects included upcycling a denim jacket with boro, boro-inspired wall hangings, stitching a pre-printed sashiko panel, and designing geometric sashiko patterns to stitch. All so inspiring.
Â
A wonderful four days, and I can’t wait to host the next retreat in August with quilter and sashiko designer Hiroe Mogi.
